Internships worldwide
for vets and vet students.

Are you looking for reliable shelter-clinics as veterinarian or veterinary student to gain more experience?

Are you a 6th-year student of Veterinary Medicine with knowledge to spay and/or neuter and would like to practice more with professional guidance? Or are you a graduated veterinarian? Even then we have some challenging addresses for you, where various techniques can be practiced to gain more experience and to help many strays in several countries worldwide.

We are a non-commercial foundation in The Netherlands, with a lot of contacts with many shelters around the world. We are more than pleased to help you to find a suitable address.

You can make your own choice from the shelters you will find in the menu bar. All destinations are near an international airport and accommodation is between 0 and 40 euro p.p.p.d. Further details can be found on the specific pages. The reservation fee is 39 Euro ex VAT, which will be used to support shelter clinics with extra CNR-spay/neutering for strays.

The Google way

When you use Google, you can probably find a lot of animal shelters that might be prepared to take you on as an apprentice.

There is nothing wrong about researching this by yourself. But there is a risk that the shelter of your choice turns out to be not really what you expected and was hoping for. After all... you are devoting your time to helping these shelters, so you may as well get the best out of it.

Shelters that seek our assistance in recruiting volunteers are put under severe scrutiny and have to comply with a lot of rules and standards. This is to protect volunteers from having bad experiences.

On this website we aim at providing the best possible information for choosing an animal shelter for your internship, preparation for your trip and giving you an indication about what to expect of an internship in one of our recommended shelters.

Which shelters are most suitable for what particular vet, student and/or volunteer?

In the navbar above you can find our recommended shelters by country in alphabetical order.
And when you click here you will see how we have established all this.

Good upfront information is essential.

It is very important for students, as well as for employees in the shelter, that correct information is exchanged during the application process at all time.

This will enable us to give you a picture of what you can do (or not) in such a foreign animal shelter. In most cases, it will be quite different from West-European shelters.

We also provide information about (air) transport, accommodation, guidance, applying for an interneship, what you can expect from an internship and of course some general practical tips. For that other website, please click here.

Who are behind www.vetstudents.eu?

This is an initiative of Hanno Berger who is one of the founders of a specialized foundation helping strays in many countries. He gained a wide experience in guiding apprentices when he was employed by a large Dutch travel agent.

Almost all shelters that are dealt with on this website have been personally visited by Hanno and he has met most of the shelter owners. He knows exactly what vet-students can expect from them. He and his foundation are working on non-commercial base. So don't be afraid of paying too much for mediation.

Our mediation services are first class.

We try to inform you as accurate as possible and provide you with tips on which shelter would be most suitable for your internship. We guide and co-ordinate the entire process of application to the final placement in the shelter/clinic and we almost always can suggest inexpensive accommodation nearby the clinic. We are trying to maintain a maximum price of 15 euro p.p.p.d. which has to be paid on the spot.

For this information and mediation service, we ask both vet students and veterinarians a small contribution of €39 p.p., excl. VAT when a mediation has been successfully booked. This fee will be used for donations to several shelter-clinics, for extra CNR-operations.

An invoice will be issued by email after receiving your flight-information, so we know the trip will be definite.

Please note that we cannot be held responsible for providing information which at the time of arrival in the shelter seems to be not current anymore or for incorrect information provided by a third party and generally be held responsible for anything in any case.
